Carnegie Shortlist 2010

When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard? Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family. A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

A worthy entry onto the Carnegie shortlist, it held my attention from the first page. A highly original story in a most unusual setting, with many twists and turns.

Superb writing. Great story for adults and children. If you do not already own a copy buy one now!

Not as spooky as I'd hoped.....

The Graveyard book is a great novel for children. The 8-12year old age group would love it. Personally as an adult I was slightly disappointed, after so much hype and winning the Cilip award for best childrens book I was expecting perhaps a little tooo much. Still a great read for Kids & I do enjoy SOME childrens fiction and young adult, but this left me wanting a little more.

Gaiman is a wonderfully imaginative writer, full of dark flair. The premise in this book, has, through nefarious means, a young child losing his family. He is reared by a motley collections of ghosts who live by their graves in the local graveyard. There's a whole collection of ....entities...who inhabit the world, our ordinary, living reality, and, various representative of other kinds of existence. <br /> <br />There's a lot of humour in the book, quite a lot of sly education - the young reader will pick up snippets about history, medicine, literature, politics etc from the encounters the young hero makes. There's also some delicate handling of deeper matter - hints at what lies just over the border of adolescence, also bullying, revenge, death and loss. <br /> <br />And, of course, there are the wonderful illustrations by Chris Riddell. Whatever the charms this book may have as an audio book, losing these beautiful illustrations at pertinent points of the story would be a huge, huge loss

a touch of magic

what a magical piece of work this book is. The type of book that holds ones attention and his hard to put down. A closed world exisiting in a graveyard. A book which draws you into this mystic dark place and all the characters within it. <br /> When it starts, it's not what it seems, which makes it such a good read. This book will encourage reading, the imagination and hopefully make the reader go on to look for more books like this..pure genius.

Best Book I have Ever Read!

I read this book as part as the carnegie short list group at my school. My teacher said i should read this book becasuse anohter girl in the group had read it too and said it was amazing. I therefore thought i would give it a go and see what happens. With in a week I had read 5 chapters (the chapters are quite long,) and I was persuading everyone and everyone to read it, as soon as possible. It took me 2 weeks to read it and i couldn't put it down, but whats more i loved it so much that I read it twice! Last week my teacher read it and agreed. <br /> <br />I would recomend this book to anyone who likes strange, spooky, and at times miss leading books. At the begging of the book i was really confused but by the second i understood every thing, at least thats what I thought. By the 4th chaptcher, I thought I knew what had and was happening to the not quite there 'Bod', but I don't think i could of been more wrong! It's an easy read, well written, described well, and the story is described even more by the pictures at the begging of each chapter. A VERY GOOD BOOK! <br /> <br />'The Graveyard Book' Won the 2010 Carnegie Book Awards, and My Teacher, Parents, Friends and I all agree that it really deserved to win! I know describe this book as "THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ, AND PROBABLY EVER WILL!" Please read this book and persuade other people to read it too!
